Elijah 6 Months Old!

Height
Weight
Clothes size- 3M
Shoe size- 1
Diaper size- 2
Teeth- 2

Likes: watching kids, baby cereal, milk any way he can get it, riding in the stroller, toys that make noise

Dislikes: skipping a nap for church, sitting in a carseat while the family eats out, wearing socks, bath time

This has been a pretty fussy month for Elijah and we finally know why! 2 teeth have come in. They came in within about 48 hours of each other. Once they broke the surface he turned back to his normally chilled out self! Thank goodness!!

First Easter: This year we decided to go all out for Easter. We had a long talk that it is odd to us that the most excitement falls at Christmas with children instead of Easter. We are trying to reverse that in our house making Easter the most anticipated event. We had a truly blessed day full of presents (not just baskets), Worship, Community egg hunts, and mini golf. Praise the Lord He is Risen!

First visit to Chuckie Cheese- Nana and Pops came for Ruth's birthday and treated us all to Chuck E Cheese. Elijah enjoyed all the lights and hanging with his Pops. We are pretty sure he's going to grow into enjoying this place as much as his sister.

First visit to the park- We also were able to get to the park while the Reynolds visited. This was his first official park visit as he was born just in time for it to get cold! He loved swinging and playing in the grass. (A treat as we have next to none in Cuba.) Ruth received a bubble gun as a gift and he enjoyed watching the bubbles as much as she enjoyed making them! It is clear he loves the great outdoors!

We have moved to a 2 nap a day schedule and He is still wonderfully flexible. Elijah can easily transfer around in the carseat and still doesn't wake all the time if we have to run into a store. I am so thankful as school days are errand days for the little man and Me!

Elijah 5 months

Weight
Height:
Clothes size: 0-3 and 3M
Shoe size:1
Diaper size: 2

Likes: Milk, watching Ruth, being held!, grass, family, playing outside, rice cereal,

Dislikes: bath, the jumper, nursing under a cover, being put down when wanting to be held,

Milestones: We have a Roller!!! I was surprised to walk in to find Elijah laying on his tummy at the end of a nap. It took me a few seconds to realize what had happened and then run to get the camera. No more swaddles for our big boy!!

Eating: We decided along with the pediatriton that it was fine to introduce rice cereal this month. We have a little tiny might who weighs in as a 1% baby. We are hoping to add a little meat to his bones (Though his doctor is not at all concerned) and tip the scales at 2% next month! So far he loves the cereal and getting to hold a spoon.

Dedication: This month we dedicated Elijah's life publicly to God. It was so special to have our church family commit to coming along side us to pointing him in that direction. He wore his great grandfather Wayne Griffin's christening gown for the service. Real life, however, is when your Dad is the pastor and your sister is rolling all over the floor and talking loudly in the prayer because said Dad is preaching the dedication and mom is arms full with a baby. You have landed yourself in a a wild family sweet son!

Our Routine has formed to mostly a 2-3 nap day. He continues to sleep through the night and is fairly flexible with our unpredictable life.

Elijah 4 Months Old

Month 4 has been a roller coaster! Disney, Road trips, first time to Mississippi, and meeting lots of new family!

Weight:
Height:
Clothes size: 0-3 month
Shoe size: 1
Diaper size: 1 or 2

Likes: Mickey Mouse, Riding in the stroller, being held in the carrier, Ruth, attention from all his family, formula

Dislikes: being cold, nursing under a cover, bottles when he wants to nurse,

First flight: We typically give our children a grade for flying and while Ruth was our A+ girl at his age, Elijah ranks somewhere in the B-C range. He insisted on staying awake the whole trip and was not as happy to be held. The long wait to be picked up at the end didn't help the situation. We were all happy to be at our hotel once we finally arrived!!!

First Disney trip: Elijah was a trooper at Disney! He seemed to enjoy the characters and was even big enough to ride many of the rides with Mama! He will obviously not remember this adventure so we will have to make another trip in a few years so he can enjoy all the magic that Ruth did.

First time being sick: Elijah started out our trip to Disney with a little cold. It progressively got worse throughout the trip and turned to a hacking cough. After checking in with several medical professionals they told us he was doing ok. It's bark was worse than it's bite. It was still enough to put these parents into a nervous state! The little guy stayed mostly bundled for the second half of the trip.

First Road trip: After Disney Laura and the kids headed back to Mississippi with the Bullock family. He did pretty good for the 15 hour drive. Our kids know their way around a carseat since they ride for an hour at a time to go anywhere.

Mississippi: Elijah met most of his extended family and friends in Mississippi for the first time this month. We were able to spend time in Jackson with the Bagwells, the Bullocks, and the Fosters. In Columbus we spent time with the other Bullocks, Simpons, Blaney's, and the Reynolds. Everyone loved our charmer and he adjusted so well to being out of his normal routine. We believe he may have a little of his Uncle Mike and Papaw Bagwell's calm personality.

Ruth 3 Years Old

Wow 3 years!!! How has our little tiny bundle of joy turned 3? Personality may be one word to describe this tiny diva. She continues to help us see life as new and exciting every day. Her enthusiasm is contagious. It's hard not to smile and laugh when she's around. She is also a very stubborn girl. (She may have a bit of her Aunt Becca in her.) As we try not to pull our hair out at moments, we try to remind ourselves that her personality driven in the right direction will be one of a leader who is not easily shaken.

weight: 28 lbs
height: 32 inches
Clothes size: 2T/3T
Shoe size: 7
Diapers: NONE!!!

Likes: Church, making pallets in the floor, pink and purple, her middle name, anything soft, school, playing with her friends (Abi, Ellie, Olivia, Azariah, and Aliyah,) candy and food treats, Chick-Fil-A, knowing the plan, Disney anything, making (pretend) cakes, Chuckie her imaginary friend, french fries, being a big sister, Junie B. Jones books, helping in the kitchen.

Dislikes: Cleaning up toys, spicy foods, having to wait, putting on her clothes by herself when she's tired, home days, green beans

School: Ruth goes to Noah's Ark Preschool twice a week in Rio Rancho, About an hour and 15 minutes from our house. It is so worth the drive and early mornings with how she enjoys it and is thriving there. She has several special school friends (Jade and Kinley) who she talks of often. She also loves to share about what the misbehaving boys do haha. Her vocabulary has exploded thanks to all the hard work her two teachers Mrs. Pineda and Mrs. Ellis put in.

Gymnastics: She gets to start back to this fun activity now that she's 3 and can go to class without me!!! This Mama can't get over how she's big enough to go to her class by herself!

Meeting Elijah. A very proud big sister!

Elijah's Birth

It has taken me a little longer than I (Laura) expected to be able to write this Blog. I started it a few months ago and the trama of it all stopped me from getting very far. So many of you prayed for us while details were scarce and we thank you so much for that. So without further delay here is Elijah's story:

Monday October 12th started with contractions about 10 mins apart. I thought it could be the onset of labor but somehow they didn't feel concerning enough to wake Steve. So, I just got up and started timing them. By the time Steve woke up they hadn't changed much but were still consistant. We figured we might as well go in and get them checked so we called the Lackey family from our church who were sitting on hold for us to drop Ruth at a moments notice.

Not much changed by the time we arrived at the hopital contractions were still mild but about 8 min. Apart. They monitored me for several hours and decided to let us walk around the hospital to see if that would push things a long. After several hours of walking the time between contractions sped up but the intensity did not. Once hooked to the monitor again they slowed and we were told we could head home. Almost half way through the ride home the contractions stopped all together. False alarm!

Wednesday the 14th contractions started back early afternoon with a vengeance. While Ruth slept I started counting and timing them. By about 5 I told Steve I couldn't wait anymore and we had to hit the road. Once again we dropped Ruth and were on our way. This time we were pretty sure we wouldn't be back without a little one! (We were right!)

It was a popular night in triage and had to wait for about an hour to get in a room. Once there it was another 2 or so hours before seeing the doctor. An out later from that they let us cross the hall to be admitted to labor and delivery and revive drugs!!! We got checked in (for what we assumed was the long haul) right after midnight! (We were pretty excited to learn our baby's birthday would be October 15, 2015!) Soon after check in the anistesiologist came in and the epidural was given! Praise the Lord for modern meds! She was so nice and we were able to talk about our faith with her. She was not a Christian but a person of peace. Shortly after the pain subsided was when the Chaos began. Our room filled with about 10 (or more?!) medical perfesionals trying to find baby's heartbeat. The Lord is so good because I had a true peace that passes understanding. I wasn't scared at all. A total God thing. After a few exchanges back and for they decided it was time to head to surgery. Poor Steve was left all alone to wait for news. The whole way down the hall I prayed outloud very calmly for all the doctors and the baby. Once in the operating room I finally let my mind go to the place of "this baby may not come home with us" and "how are we going to explain this to Ruth?" I was sent back to reality with the consent questions and "can you feel this?" "Why YES I can!" I was pretty sure I was going to have to feel them cut me open and prayed for the ability to stand it. Moments later they gave me gas and a drink they said wouldn't taste good. They were correct yuck! And that was it...

I awoke to a nurse saying "you're baby is fine." It took me a minute to figure out where I was. "Umm where is Steve?" She handed me my phone to call him and find out. He was there in a few minutes to tell me we had a beautiful son! 10 fingers and 10 toes, just needing to have a little oxygen in the NICU. Time all feels fuzzy but they wheeled me in to meet him after that. The amazing Doctor on staff told the nurse she could hold her horses and I could nurse him as long as I wanted too. I couldn't have been more greatful! I got to hold and feed him and cry over him for the first time. (Sorry other babies and families visiting the NICU at that time! I was most definitely loud and a mess!)

Later that morning several doctors shared that it was a very serious delivery and not at all an over precaution that they took him out so quickly. Praise God for the gift of modern medican that saved his life. I am still in awe of his grace.

Again sometime later we arrived in our room. Unfortunately Elijah needed to be monitored that night for his oxygen. After a not plugged in bed fiasco (no meds for several hours!) Elijah joined us in our room! We celebrated with a steak dinner and some sparking cider compliments of the hospital! Early afternoon the Lackeys brought Ruth to the hospital! It was love at first sight (we weren't sure how it would go because she was positive we were having a sister!) gifts between the two were exchanged and lots of hugs and kisses too. Ruth made us so proud to go home with the Lackeys and didn't cry at all!

Later that evening we were informed Elijah would be headed back to the NICU. Little did we know he would not be returning to our room again. Following the birth he was tested and found to have a possible infection. He would have to recieve antibiotics for several days. Staying in the hospital was such a blessing, however, I was able to nurse him around the clock. (It also made me get up and walk. An important thing to do after a c-section.)

After a couple days in the NICU we were moved to intermediate care. This was a huge praise! It ment less sick babies and the prospect of going home soon!! In the midst of everything I was discharged from the hospital, my mom arrived and we moved into the Ronald McDonald house. I would be missing so much of the God things of this story if I didn't mention that Ruth's school not only allowed her to come extra days but also prayed daily in her class for Elijah and checked on us through texting. They even stayed late with her when my mom got lost trying to pick her up 2 hours after arriving in town off the airplane. The Ronald Mcdonald house was one of the biggest blessings to our family. They provided breakfast lunch and dinner plus a comfortable place to stay and play for Ruth. God certainly used that organization to bless us in our time of trile. My mom was likely the biggest blessing of all. She took over almost all of Ruth's care and took care of me too. I'm not sure how we would have managed without her.

Meanwhile God was working in Elijah's care as well. One particular day sticks out in my mind. Elijah was headed home!!! We  over the moon! We fast tracked all our tests (you have to do extra training and testing requirements to be discharged from the NICU.) and all we had left was for them to do the car seat test (sitting in a car seat for an hour) we arrived bright and early the next morning to find he had borderline passed his car seat test and it would have to be repeated. What?! Ok whatever. And then he fails. Miserably. What?! Back on antibiotics (for which they had just removed his head IV (are you kidding?!) and oxygen (he wasn't on this before!!!) did we mention he was circumcised earlier and now he won't wake up and nurse easily. The poor guy gets an X-ray new IV (after 15 plus atempts to get it in) and a hearing test. Thorough out the whole day our nurse was right there giving us extra special attention and encouragement. Bless her she didn't get any of her paperwork done or even a lunch break. Not one time did she even look annoyed. I. Was. A. Mess. Even in our distress God gives us rays of hope. She was our hope that day.

While in the NICU we met several other families. We had a sweet baby with  down syndrome  Whole had been born at 1.7 lbs and another sweet baby born at 2.5 lbs. they were a constant reminder that we didn't have it that bad. When my mind would go to the place of envy of others bringing their babies home days after birth while this was my second NICU baby they would bring me back to reality. My hope is that both are home safe and sound now as they were both hoping to go home within a month or so after us.

We expected not to go home for another 2 days but were surprised with a "you can go home!" On October 23rd! 10 days after checking in we were headed back to Cuba! We were so excited for our sweet church family to meet him! They were so sweet lifting us up in prayer while we were gone.

Elijah 3 months old!

Weight- 11.4 lbs
Height- 22 in
Clothes- 0-3
Diaper size- 1
Shoe size- 1

Likes- swinging, soft blankets, Sister, waking up right before a hot meal is served, nursing. Looking at a fire, Christmas lights

Dislikes- having to be put down mid feed, when Sister gets a little rough, having his nose sucked

Firsts- once again Elijah had a big month of meeting new family. Pops (Steve's dad) came with Nana for Christmas. They both enjoyed meeting and dreaming of all the exciting adventures they would have as he gets older. Aunt Becca (Laura's sister) came just in time for New Years. She loves him too! To say he was spoiled by both of them was an understatement! But who are we to stop the family from loving on our babies!

Christmas- For the second time our child was tasked with playing th part of Jesus. He did this in both our live nativity and in the Christmas musical. He did a great job and everyone loved having a real baby Jesus! Christmas morning was nice and relaxing. Elijah did a lot of relaxing. To be truthful Elijah slept through almost all of it! No need to worry when you have a two year old sister. She will gladly help you open all of your gifts! Santa brought him a door jumper which we look forward to trying out very soon!

Personality- our little man continues to be a very content chill guy. He doesn't fuss much at all. It was hard to come up with things he dislikes because it doesn't seem like he has many. We often say we thought Ruth was easy but Elijah is a price of cake compared to her! (It also could have something to do with the almost 3 months of solid help!!!) he is starting to smile more regularly which makes things so fun!

Sleep- we have hit the jackpot with sleepers! He is regularly sleeping from 11pm-6am! That makes for one very happy Mama! He is taking about 5 naps a day which seems like a ton! We attribute it to our much more fluid schedule then the one we had with Ruth. He does great even when we are not at home on Ruth's school days.

Schedule:
5-7 wake and nurse
6-8ish nap
11ish wake and nurse
12ish nap
3-4ish wake and nurse
5- nap
8- wake and nurse
9- nap
11ish wake and feed
11ish- night night!

What's in a Name

We have decided to continue on with the tradition of an Old Testament first name and a New Testament middle name with our Sweet Elijah. We put a good bit of thought into Why we chose this name for our Son and here's Why.

Elijah is a great profit in the Old Testament and as you can see in the picture above His name means "The LORD is my God." We first and foremost pray this over our Son. We look forward to the day when he will chose to follow the Lord with all his heart and like the profit speak with boldness, the Lords word. Our hope is that he will be a witness to many of the unequaled greatness of our God.

Another aspect that characterized the life of Elijah the profit is his prayer life. He was in unique communication with God and we hope this for our sweet little man as well.

Elijah's Middle name, like Ruth's, is a family name. Thomas, is his grandfather's first name. (A tradition that goes back for generations in the Reynolds family.) We hope Elijah will be like him in his strong love for family and the Lord. We also pray that like the Thomas of the Bible our Elijah will be a disciple of of Christ. Following him with everything he has until the very end of his life. As tradition tells us Thomas preached the gospel in Greece and Indian until he was eventually martyred for his faith, being killed by a spear.

We look forward to seeing Elijah grow into His name. Please pray with us for him to be a mighty man of God!
